THE FOOT INSIDER

I Own 9 Pairs of Flats. Eight of Them Hurt. Only One Doesn't.

Let me save you the money I wasted on “comfortable” flats.

I have lived in flats since my forties. Leather ballet pumps, loafers, smart flats for work — I own nine pairs, and I can tell you exactly which bit of my foot each one hurts.

The loafers rub the back of my heel raw. The pumps press straight onto the bunion joint until it throbs. By three o'clock the ball of my foot is burning and I am walking on the outside edges of my feet like something out of a nature programme.

And I kept buying more. That is the mad part. Eight pairs. Over £680. Every single one looked lovely in the shop.

Eight failures. One winner. Here's the difference:

1. I Can Put Them On Without Sitting Down

This sounds like nothing until your back is stiff in the mornings. Most of my flats need two hands, a shoehorn and a chair. The loafers need me to hook a finger down the back and heave.

The Elora has a soft knit upper and an elastic strap. I step in, the strap goes over the top of my foot, and that is it. No bending, no forcing, no hopping about on one leg in the hallway.

2. My Bunion Finally Had Room

This is the one that mattered to me. A normal flat narrows to a point exactly where the bunion joint sits, and presses on it with every single step.

The Elora toe box is cut 20% wider, so your toes sit side by side instead of being squeezed into a triangle. And because the upper is knit, not leather, it gives where the joint is instead of pressing back.

No rubbing. No red, angry patch by the evening. First time in years my feet did not feel squeezed.

3. They Look Like Proper Shoes, Not Comfort Shoes

This is what put me off wide-fit flats for years. Say “wide fit” and you picture something beige and orthopaedic with a thick rubber sole — the sort of thing you would only wear round the garden.

The Elora is a Mary Jane. Neat square toe, slim sole, a small silver buckle on the strap. It goes with trousers, with a dress, to a wedding. Nobody has ever guessed they are comfort shoes. They just look like shoes.

4. Less Strain on My Knees, Hips & Lower Back

I did not expect a flat shoe to do anything for my back. But when your feet hurt you change the way you walk  shorter steps, weight on the outside edge, hips doing the work  and your knees, hips and lower back pay for it all day long.

Because the Elora spreads your weight across the whole foot instead of loading one sore spot, there is less of that strain travelling up the chain. Women write to us about plantar fasciitis, swollen feet and stiff joints feeling easier to live with.

5. The Three O'Clock Burn Is Gone

Every flat I owned did the same thing. Fine for an hour. By mid-afternoon the ball of my foot was burning and I was looking for somewhere to sit down.

It is because most flats are a thin piece of leather on a hard sole there is nothing between you and the pavement.

The Elora has a cushioned insole that takes the shock and a flexible rubber sole that bends with your foot instead of fighting it. I did the shops, then town, then the grandchildren, and only noticed at bedtime that my feet had not complained once.

6. They Stay On. No More Clawing My Toes

Every ballet pump I own slides off at the heel, so without even realising it you grip with your toes all day to keep them on. That is half the reason your feet are cramped and tired by the afternoon.

The elastic strap across the instep holds the shoe on properly, so your toes can stop working. And the sole sits flat on the ground — heel and toe at the same height, so you stand level instead of being tipped forward. On wet pavement I have stopped doing that nervous little shuffle.

7. Easy to Keep Looking New

Leather flats scuff the moment you catch a kerb, and once they have creased across the toe they never look right again.

These wipe down with a damp cloth, and the knit lets go of dirt far more easily than leather ever did. Mine have been through rain, gravel and a very muddy car park and they still look like the day they arrived.

8. Fresh, Comfortable Feet in Every Season

Flats without socks in summer – you know exactly what I mean. By lunchtime, your feet can feel hot and uncomfortable, especially when your shoes trap heat.

The breathable knit upper allows air to circulate naturally, helping your feet stay fresh and comfortable throughout the day. No clamminess, no slipping about inside your shoes, and no uncomfortable rubbing. And when the weather gets colder? Simply pair them with your favourite socks!

The flexible, roomy design gives your feet space to stay comfortable, even with socks on. Perfect for warmer days without socks and cooler days with them one comfortable pair for every season.

9. Everything a Podiatrist Tells You to Look For

Ask a podiatrist what to look for in a flat shoe after fifty and you hear the same list every time: room at the toes, a soft upper that gives instead of pressing, shock absorption under the ball of the foot, and a sole that bends.

That list is more or less the Elora spec sheet. Mine was the first pair my physio did not immediately tell me to take back.

10. Best Value of Everything I Tried

Four years of buying flats. The pair on the end is the one I actually wear.

I added up what I had already spent, which I do not recommend doing:

Two pairs of leather ballet pumps

£84

Loafers that looked perfect in the shop

£79

“Wide fit” flats from a comfort brand

£68

Insoles, gel pads and blister plasters

£46

These, in the sale

£44.95

Two hundred and seventy-seven pounds of shoes that hurt, and the pair that does not was the cheapest of the lot. That is not a clever advert line. It is just irritating.
